How to Select Compensation Wire for K Type Thermocouple?

Aug 11 , 2023

The characteristics of k type thermocouples are well known. Little is known about it's compensating wires. In my opinion, choosing the right k thermocouple compensation wire can not only reduce the measurement error, but also facilitate us to solve the product problem in time.

It is well known that k type thermocouple is a passive temperature sensor. Unlike thermal resistance, thermal resistance requires lead resistance compensation to reduce measurement errors. The k type thermocouple is to add compensating wires to minimize the measurement error. Therefore, compensation wire must be used according to the type of thermocouple and the use of the occasion for the correct selection. For example, a type K thermocouple should choose the compensation wire of a type K thermocouple, a type B thermocouple should choose the compensation wire of a type B thermocouple, and so on. In addition, in order to improve the anti-interference of the thermocouple connection wire, the shielded compensation wire can be used. It can be used in complex interference source ring working conditions, but the shielding layer must be strictly grounded, otherwise the shielding layer not only does not play a shielding role, but enhances the interference.

According to our experience, it is better to control the length of k type thermocouple compensation wire within 15 meters. If it is more than 15 meters, it is recommended to use temperature transmitter for signal transmission. Because the temperature transmitter converts the potential value corresponding to the temperature into the dc current transmission, the anti-interference emphasis is very high.
