There are two main types of pressure switches on the market, mechanical pressure switches and electronic pressure switches. PS302 is an electric pressure switch with digital display.

 

An digital electronic pressure switch offers many advantages over a mechanical pressure switch. Some of the advantages include greater accuracy, less contact wear, excellent long-term stability, simple operation, and the ability to perform thousands of switching cycles.

 

How Does PS302 Pressure Switch Work?

PS302 pressure switch is a passive device since all it needs to function is the presence or absence of pressure. Diaphragm pressure compresses a calibrated spring. If the spring tension reaches or exceeds the set point, it will close the contacts in an NO switch or open them in an NC switch.

 

Common applications

Pressure switches can be used in various applications as listed below:

To monitor and control the system air pressure, HVAC, gas cylinders, air pumps, etc. utilize air compressor pressure switches.

When the engine’s oil pressure drops below the preset level, oil pressure switches are used to determine when the oil pressure has dropped.

Both industrial and residential furnace pressure switches serve as safety devices. In the event of low air pressure during the furnace start-up, they shut the furnace down.

A well pump pressure switch is used in both residential and commercial buildings to bring water from the well and ensure there is enough water pressure in the system to provide water without being overpressed.

Residential, commercial, and agricultural water pumps use pressure switches to automatically regulate flow.

A vacuum pressure switch measures the vacuum in the system or the negative pressure. These components are found in boilers, electric heaters, air compressors, and transmission systems.

 

Applications of Pressure Switches

  • Compressed air systems:to turn on or off the compressor at the set point.
  • HVAC systems. Pressure switches serve an important safety function in heating systems such as furnaces. They will turn the furnace off upon detecting negative pressure generated by the draft-inducing motor. Pressure switches can also detect leaks by monitoring gas pressure.
  • Process equipment. Fluid and gas flow control equipment use pressure switches to maintain a steady rate of flow.
  • Pumping systems. Pressure switches help maintain water levels in a reservoir by activating or deactivating the pump as necessary. When the water pressure drops below a threshold, the NO contacts close to drive a current through the pump. When the water pressure reaches the set point, the contacts open to cut off current to the pump, thus ceasing the pumping operation.

How to Select A Pressure Switch?

There are several selection criteria to take into consideration when selecting pressure switches:

  • Pressure Range: Pressure switches are designed for a specific pressure rang The actual working rangeshould not exceed the rated range.

 

  • Operating Temperature:The operating temperature influences the material used. Certain materials degrade at high temperatures. 

 

  • Process Fluid: The chemical properties of the media determines the type of material required for the wetted parts, housing and more to ensure its ability ofwithstanding any chemical or physical attack from the process fluid.

 

  • Type of Pressure: Positive pressure systems often use pressure switches. They can also be used in vacuum applications. Negative pressure systems require pressure switches specified for vacuum and compound pressure. Diaphragms are ideal for vacuum and low-pressure applications. Pistons are ideal for high-pressure applications.
