Something about Turbine Flow Meter

Aug 11 , 2023

People may know little about turbine flow meter compared with other flow meters, for example ultrasonic flow meter, as it constitutes about 7% of the world market.

What is Turbine Flow Meter

A turbine flow meter is a volume sensing device which uses the mechanical energy of the fluid to rotate a “pinwheel” (rotor) in the flow stream.

How Turbine Flow Meter Operates

A turbine flow meter is used for volumetric total flow and/or flow rate measurement and has a relatively simple working principle. As the liquid or gas passes through the turbine meter, it impinges upon turbine blades that are free to rotate about an axis along the center line of the turbine housing. The angular (rotational) velocity of the turbine rotor is directly proportional to the fluid velocity flowing through the turbine. The resulting output is then taken and can be shown on the meter display.

Industries Where Turbine Flow Meters are Used

The applications of turbine flow meters are wide, and they can measure liquids and gases, typically water and wastewater, gas utility, chemical, power, food and beverage, aerospace, pharmaceutical, metals and mining, and pulp and paper.

Selecting a turbine flow meter is the key to success but abrupt transitions from gas flow to liquid flow should be avoided because they can mechanically stress the flowmeter, degrade accuracy, and/or damage the flowmeter.
